Dear Colleagues in ab initio,
I have received the following message:

Liebe KollegInnen,

looking ahead into the future, we're currently looking into the
possibility to admit Ab initio and/or post-GCSE students of German
to our Honours degree programme. Since we're probably not the only
ones, we'd be interested to find out what experiences other depts.
had/have with Beginner's German for "proper" (i.e. not subsidiary)
students. Any comments whatsoever are invited - I'll post a summary
within 4 weeks.

Greetings!
Nils Langer

Dear Nils,
Your surmise that ab initio German is currently on the agenda in several institutions is
undoubtedly correct. However, you may not be aware that a lot of in this field work has been done
over the last decade in UK and Irish German circles, not least by the "Standing
Conference on ab initio German in the UK and Ireland" which has been holding meetings
and conferences on ab initio issues and spawning publications on
just this topic for several years now.

The two most recent publications you may wish to look at are:
		1. Ab initio language learning - A guide to good practice in universities
and colleges - The example of German, eds.: Gabriela Leder; Nicola
Reimann; Riana Walsh. CILT, London 1996 and
		2. Ab initio German: Trends and Perspectives, eds,: Christine Flude
and Susan Tebbutt.= Issue No, 4 of INTERFACE, Bradford Studies in
Language, Culture and Society, University of Bradford 1999.

I hope this information will assist your project.

Alles Gute,
Mike Jones
Do I sense a revival here?
Gruesse an alle,
Mike
