National electronic Library for Health. Separate Virtual Branch Library
(VBL) for nursing, midwifery and allied health?
Below is a summary from Rebecca Davies of responses received from the email
message sent to nursing and allied health lists regarding whether there
should be a separate VBL for nursing, midwifery and allied health and
suggestions of databases.
Many thanks to those who responded.
If anyone should want the full word document of responses (6 pages), please
contact Rebecca (contact details below):
I received 38 responses from a wide variety of fairly representative
individuals.
SUMMARY
1. From the wide, and fairly representative group who replied to the
email the clear majority (74%) are in favour of a VBL for Nursing and PAMs,
in order to ensure that these health professionals are represented in NELH.
2. Most of those who were against (18%) a separate VBL regarded
marginalisation as a real threat to this information being available
elsewhere - however as many others indicated the technology for linking
between materials already exists this would mean that information would not
be kept in a separate location, rather links would ensure that nursing and
PAMs material would be available at all levels of NELH. This would not
exclude information seekers using all areas of NELH.
3. The role of the VBL as a gateway for Nurses and PAMs into NELH and
as a tool to ensure NELH is widely used by these health professionals was
stressed.
4. The availability of databases on NELH received an enthusiastic
response from library and information providers and health professionals.
The most popular databases were:
CINAHL, BNI, AMED and ASSIA.
