I'm almost embarrassed about my last email on this topic. I say
'almost' because I did warn you that I'm not incredibly familiar with
this area.
Firstly I want to apologise to Peter O'Sullivan (note the 'O'?), and
to those who tried to find articles by searching using the wrong name.
(I said I apologise!)
Anyway, a very comprehensive article published by him concerning
cocontraction of TA and Multifidus and segmental lumbar stability,
etc... can be found in the Manual Therapy journal...
O'Sullivan, P. (2000). Lumbar segmental 'instability': clinical
presentation and specific exercise management. Manual Therapy, 5(1),
2-12.
In my searches, I've also stumbled across some other references of
interest. One which was developed by a member of this list (who seemed
to keep it quiet?)
Taylor, J. & O'Sullivan, P. (2000) Lumbar segmental instability:
pathology, diagnosis and conservative management, Physical Therapy of
the Low Back, 3rd Ed, W.B. Saunders, Phillidelphia, pp. 201-247.
O'Sullivan, P., Twomey, L., & Allison, G. (1997). Evaluation of
specific stabilising exercise in the treatment of chronic low back
pain with radiological diagnosis of spondylolysis and
spondylolisthesis. Spine, Dec 15(24), 2959-2967.
Well, for the keen amoung us, this may shed some light on the topic.
Bye for now,
Luke Harris,
2nd year PT Student (Curtin).
