** there is actually 10 times more cold receptors on the skin than
heat receptors, and this is why I favour the use of cold.
i'm not too sure, as this is what i'm only starting to cover at the
moment, but i have been told that the proportions of cutaneous
cold/heat receptors are quite different:
that there is roughly 15-20% A-beta fibres, 15-20% A-delta fibres, and
60-70% C fibres in the skin. and although both A-delta and C both
respond to noxious cold, thse figures indicate there is a
significantly higher number of heat receptors than cold receptors in
skin. (i.e. C : A-delta ~ 3 or 4 : 1)
now i know there's a difference between glaborous and (whatever the
opposite to glaborous is) skin, but i'm not sure of the difference.
anyone?
and i'm well aware that the terminology i have used may be quite
incorrect - as i said, i'm learning - so if you can help me out here
(anybody!) i'd appreciate it.
luke.
