Hi - no refs but some considerations based on my experience of treating
athletes:
i. Check biomechanics - static (pes planus) and dynamic pronators
or high rigid arched foot (pes cavus??)
ii. Achilles, gastrocs, soleus tightness
iii. Weak anterior compartment muscles/other muscles - foot flexors.
iv. Your speciality - correct shoes (often old, collapsed, punctured
air soles etc etc)
v. Pathoneurodynamics
There are a variety of treatments but essentially the biomechanics must
be sorted out e.g. may need a temporary or even permanent orthotic (can
use taping for temp relief). Stretch structures as appropriate - almost
always tendo-achilles complex (may need soft tissue work on this
especially soleus), foot flexors. Home ice massage - easiest done by
rolling foot over a tin (e.g. Heinz baked beans) that has been in the
freezer. Strengthening foot intrinsics and later as condition eases will
probably need eccentric TA complex strengthening . Treat neural
structures if appropriate. I have found ultrasound to be beneficial for
acute injuries but have always used it in conjunction some or most of
above (Frequency 3-5x per week for first week only - low dose pulsed
e.g.0.3 - 0.5 W/cm (1:4) I(SAPA) 1MHz)
I am aware of successful treatment with acupuncture/dry needling but
don't know much about it.
Good luck
