I'd really like to see this happen. The Teaching in the Community Colleges
list (TCC-L) has successfully run conferences completely online for the
last five years. The one in April this year had more than 400 paid
participants with a registration fee around US$35-50 if I remember
correctly. In terms of technology, it was all text based with email lists,
web-based forums and synch chat for presentations.
