Dear Emma,
I have read the summary of the project that you sent me after the IFA conference and the comments that have been put up on the smrforum in answer to your request for comments on 6 figure references.
I think the concept behind your HLF application is excellent and it will help considerably to make the SMR more accessible, both in terms of allowing more individuals to use it and in terms of providing helpful finding interfaces to those who do. From the way you have structured it, I think that it will be of most use to the genuinely interested and will help raise the profile of the heritage in Warwickshire. I do not think that it will compete with the professional advice and planning services because of the way you are planning to deliver the information. I would firmly endorse 6 figure NGRs. I see no point in withholding information on the location of sites. You do not protect the sites or indeed the landowners interests by withholding information. There are other methods already in place to achieve such objectives and they may need to be brought to the attention of users of the SMR browser.
I would hope that this provides a model for other SMRs and that eventually they will be able to interact with one another seamlessly to form an online resource for the heritage across the UK.

I have submitted my bid to the HLF for a web enabled version of the
Warwickshire SMR (hurrah!). However, I have been asked to confirm if I
intend to use 4 or 6 figure grid references. I did not make a firm
commitment when I put in the bid but I started by thinking that 6 figure
references were OK, but now having spoken to colleagues I think that 4
figure references are most appropriate.
I have told my HLF caseworker that I would ask the question of SMR Officers
on SMR Forum to help to form a reasoned opinion.
So, what do you reckon?
