A draft of the subject specific guidelines has now been sent to the ESRC
and I acknowledge with thanks both all the many comments sent to me or
to other members of the panel, and the hard work of other panel members
(Joan Orme, Jane Lewis, Meg Huby, Fran Wasoff and Geraldine MacDonald)
in devising our draft guidelines. This is to inform the 'communities' of
interest about the next steps in the process of finalising the subject
specific and generic guidelines. Please copy this to anyone who may be
interested but does not access this mailbase.
The draft of generic guidelines (both the general framework which has
been on the web for a while, and other material regarding transferable
skills, recognition and other matters) and all subject specific drafts
will go to the ESRC Training Board subgroup meeting on October 16th. Any
initial discussion between the ESRC and subject panels will take place
between the 16th and the 30th October, when a consolidated package with
recommendations will go to the full ESRC Training Board.
Following that meeting, agreed drafts of all the material will be posted
on the ESRC web for consultative purposes. This consultative period will
last until the end of November. Final drafts have to be agreed by then
and the ESRC will then process and agree final drafts and publish the
collected guidance in January 2001.
There is no particular reason why anyone very anxious to see the
existing subject specific draft cannot do so now but this may not be
precisely the version which appears in early November, depending on the
response of the ESRC Training Board. I know there have been comments
made on aspects of the generic guidelines published to date and I
believe it is in order for panels to receive comments about both the
subject specific guidelines and about the generic guidelines during the
consultative period. There may be a meeting of all the panel chairs in
November and this may be the arena in which more generalised concerns
can be raised. To make life straightforward, in any case, I suggest any
comments are sent to me and I will undertake to circulate them to panel
members. Members of the panel are prepared to meet constituencies if
that would be helpful and appropriate; I suggest again that any requests
are channelled through me.
Please respond to this and regarding any other relevant matters to my
work email below and not to the email address at the header of this
note.
Thanks for your interest.
