CALL FOR PAPERS
European Sociological Association 2001, Aug 28-Sept 1 Helsinki
A new Research Network on 'AGEING IN EUROPE' has been set up and
will run a stream at the conference, with six sessions planned.
In each session, papers based on quantitative or qualitative research are
invited,
as are theoretical papers.
Those which are comparative across welfare states are especially welcome.
Abstracts (about 150 words) should be sent by Dec 31st 2000,
indicating in which session(s) your paper fits, to the co-ordinator:

The six sessions are as follows:
1. Social divisions in material resources in later life.
This session will include papers on pensions, savings, housing or other
material assets, highlighting inequalities according to gender, class, age
or ethnicity. Papers may also deal with intergenerational transfers,
including both intra-family transfers and those achieved through the state.
2. Ageing and health.
Papers are invited on social divisions in mental or physical health,
health-related behaviour or health and domiciliary services, focussing on
the effects of age or life course stage.
3. Quality of life among older people.
This session will include papers on defining and measuring the quality of
later life, as well as research on older people's quality of life, including
in residential settings.
4. Family and support networks.
This session will be concerned with all aspects of informal care and
support, both intra-generational and inter-generational.
5. Life course transitions.
These include pathways into retirement, as well as events such as
widow(er)hood, remarriage, changes in health status, or entering residential
care.
6. Participation and activity in later life.
As life after retirement lengthens, older people's participation in part
time employment, voluntary activities, campaigning, political life, leisure
pursuits, hobbies, associations and education is of increasing interest.
Papers may discuss how activities vary according to socio-economic status,
marital status, gender, ethnicity or health status.
