I have a copy of 'The Daily Mail' dated January 23, 1936. The following
paragraph appears:
Kipling's Funeral Today
'Recessional' to be Sung
The ashes of Rudyard Kipling will be interred at noon today beneath the
pavement of Poets' Corner, in Westminster Abbey.
Thus the remains of the Poet of Empire will rest within a stone's throw of
Westminster Hall, where, a few hours later, the body of his King and lifelong
friend will be brought to lie in state.
Rudyard Kipling's simple funeral service is to be conducted by the Dean of
Westminster, Dr Foxley Norris, assisted by the Precentor, the Rev. C.M.
Armitage, and it is understood that the poet's own "Recessional" will be sung
by the Abbey choir.
Mr Baldwin, Kipling's cousin, will be a pall-bearer, and with the Prime
Minister will walk Admiral of the Fleet Sir Roger Keyes, Field-Marshall Sir
Archibald Montgomery-Massingberd, Sir James Barrie, Sir Fabian Ware, Mr. A.B.
Ramsey (Master of Magdalene College, Cambridge), Mr. H.A. Gwynne and Mr. A.S.
Watt.
No more tickets are available for the service, but the public will be admitted
to the north transept.
I don't have a copy for the following day, but I have no doubt that this is
what actually happened.
