Now, re CoolEdit: I was given a sheet of instructions by a friend and I
found them really useful. Unfortunately, I have no idea where they came
from or who wrote them, but my thanks go to whoever it was. I've decided
to ditch the idea of voice recognition software, because the looping
function of CoolEdit makes transcription quite easy. Hope you also find the

USING CoolEdit96 (SHAREWARE)
Connecting the tape player:
1. Connect tape player to computer's "audio in".
2. Click File, New, New Waveform (settings).
Set at 16000 sample rate, mono channel, 16 bit resolution.
3. Press play on tape player.
Setting the sound recording levels:
4. Click on Options, monitor VU level.
5. Open Volume Control by either a: double click on bottom task bar
b: click on start, programs, accessories
entertainment, volume control.
6. Once in Volume Control, click on Options, properties, select recording,
show all, okay.
7. Set volume recording level as high as you can, but so that VU level
remains under 0, ensuring no distortion.
8. Click on Options, untick Monitor VU level.
9. Click on Record in CoolEdit, and press Play on tape recorder.
10. Click on Stop in CoolEdit when you've recorded the section that you
want. Press stop on tape player.
11. Click in the Window, so that the section is not selected.
12. Click on Play in CoolEdit to hear the recorded segment.
Saving the file:
13. Click on File, Save Waveform As, Save as Type Windows PCM (*.wav)
Transcribing using looping function:
14. Click on File, Open, Select File, double click.
15. Select a section of the data. (The selected section will be in blue).
The section selected must commence with the vertical, yellow, dotted line.
(To move the yellow dotted line just click in the Window.)
16. Click on Options, Loop Mode.
17. Click on Loop in bottom left hand corner.
18. Open Word document. Start transcribing.
