I learned that this was in prospect three months ago, but on terms
which I did not feel permitted me to say so explicitly beyond a narrow
circle. Those who have to hand the latest issue of Sheetlines (the
Charles Close Society's organ), number 58 (Aug 2000), may care to read
or reread my piece on the future for 1:100,000 mapping, which was
written in the knowledge that this Landranger review was to take
place. This review may be the best chance for some time to come for
those of us who think that the time may have come to replace the
1:50,000 with a 1:100,000, or to push ideas for some sort of
`superplan' service for small scales mapping. (It will also no doubt
enable worshippers of purple access land, green cyclying blobs and
magenta named-path lozenges to praise these to the skies!)
What is surprising is the timing, which might be interpreted
unkindly as not wishing to overburden the staff who will have to work
through the responses!
