£80,000 Granted in the Sharing Museum Skills
Millennium Awards
London, 8 September 2000 -- Resource: The Council for Museums, Archives and
Libraries has awarded grants of over £80,000 to 25 secondees under the
Sharing Museum Skills Millennium Awards scheme. The scheme, which is funded
by the Millennium Commission, enables both paid and volunteer staff in
museums, galleries, libraries and archives to undertake placements with
other organisations within the sectors.
Catherine Atkinson, Millennium Awards Administrator, commented: "This
scheme is a valuable opportunity for museum, library and archive
professionals and volunteers to expand their skills. We are delighted to
award 25 grants in this round and expect the next round to attract even more
applicants."
The following were awarded grants under Round 7 of the scheme.
* Sheila Armstrong, Volunteer, 2 Willow Road, London, (National
Trust), has been seconded to the Tate St Ives to contribute to the Family
Programme and to help complete the teachers' pack for the Barbara Hepworth
Museum. Sheila has been awarded £4,000.
* Nicholas Callow, Volunteer, 2 Willow Road, London, (National Trust),
has been seconded to High Cross House, Dartington Hall, Totnes to gain
experience in archive work and to develop the interpretation of the house
and collection for members of the public. Nicholas has been awarded £3,276.
* Peter Morris, Senior Curator, Experimental Chemistry, Science
Museum, London, will be seconded to The Georgian House, Edinburgh, (National
Trust Scotland), to assist with the development of a CD-ROM on 18th century
Edinburgh. Peter has been awarded £3,790.
* Katherine Steiner, Exhibition Developer, Science Museum, London,
will be seconded to Centres for Curiosity and Imagination (Kids' Club
Network), London, to produce a set of online guidelines for new hands-on
children's centres. Katherine has been awarded £3,711.
* Ann Moran, Museum Attendant, Hull Museum, will be seconded to
Newcastle Discovery Museum to look at issues surrounding disability and
access. Ann has been awarded £3,920.
* Tom Goulder, Senior Assistant, Hull City Museums and Galleries, will
be seconded to the Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester to expand his
existing experience with hands-on learning, specifically with school groups
and children who are social excluded. Tom has been awarded £3,865.
* Graham Warhurst, Attendant, Hull Museums, will be seconded to the
National Railway Museum, York, to gain more front of house development
experience and share his own knowledge of this area. Graham has been
awarded £3,794.
* Claudia Ricketts, Volunteer, Nottingham Museum and Art Gallery, has
been seconded to 2 Willow Road, London, (National Trust), to devise a
marketing plan targeting identified groups/communities and to increase
general awareness of Willow Road. Claudia has been awarded £3,227.
* Clare van Loenen, Keeper of Art, The Castle Museum and Art Gallery,
Nottingham, will be seconded to the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, to
develop interpretation material for the international photography collection
in relation to cultural issues concerning representation and identity.
Clare has been awarded £3,271.
* Christopher Oswald, Volunteer, Royal Botanic Gardens, Edinburgh,
will be seconded to the Natural History Museum, London, to work as part of a
team to develop a project for the Wildlife Garden which is part of the
public outreach programme at the Natural History Museum. Christopher has
been awarded £3,034.
* Lynn McRae, Heritage Society/Volunteer Display Committee Member,
Fraserburgh Heritage Centre, Banff, Scotland, has been seconded to Duff
House, to develop education projects and interpretation of exhibits in the
area of adult education. Lynn has been awarded £2,057.
* Sheena Esson, Volunteer, Nairn Museum, Scotland, will be seconded to
the Stirling Smith Museum to work on the design, preparation and setting up
of exhibitions. Sheena has been awarded £3,316.
* Steven Johnstone, Technician, McManus Galleries, Dundee, will be
seconded to the National Gallery of Scotland, to gain experience in the
handling, packing and transportation of works of art. Steven has been
awarded £2,520.
* John Butler, Curator, Burton Art Gallery and Museum, will be
seconded to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery to work on two exhibitions,
The British Art Show and 'Earth and Fire'. John has been awarded almost
£3,000.
* Lynda Killick, Outreach/Marketing Manager, Bradford Industrial
Museum & Horses at Work, has been seconded to Harewood House, Leeds, to
produce accessible educational material on Harewood House. Lynda has been
awarded £2,770.
* John Simmons, Museum Technician, Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford, will be
seconded to the Museum of Mankind (British Museum) to re-display
ethnographic African artefacts as part of the Great Court scheme. John has
been awarded £2,500.
* Ruth Greenbaum, Commercial Officer, Manchester City Art Gallery,
will be seconded to The Bodleian Library, Oxford, to develop an online
Internet shopfront. Ruth has been awarded £4,000.
* Susan Child, Volunteer, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery,
Carlisle, will be seconded to the Manchester Museum, to take part in the
development of the New Learning Centre. Susan has been awarded £4,000.
* Susan Thornton, Museum Assistant, previously Visitor Services
Manager, Wycombe Museum, will be seconded to Leicester City Museums Service,
to forge links between Leicester City Museums Service and a Sure Start
programme, a pilot project looking at the organisation of activities at
local museums for a Family Reading Group. Susan has been awarded £2,212.
* Shirley-Anne Hadley, Outreach Officer, The Archaeology Outreach
Service, Liverpool University, will be seconded to Leicestershire Museums,
Arts and Records Service, to develop archaeological displays, publications
and sites and monuments record(s). Shirley-Anne has been awarded £2,541.
* Margaret Harrison, Registrar, Wakefield Museums and Arts, will be
seconded to the Museum Documentation Association (mda), Cambridge, to carry
out research into the use of digital collections information in museums.
Margaret has been awarded £4,000.
* Jonathan Howard, Guide/Volunteer, Kelmscott Manor, Gloucestershire,
will be seconded to Wessex Regional Office of the National Trust. He will
work with the Education Officer developing education programmes for school
children and students, and activities for visitors of all ages. Jonathan
has been awarded £3,460.
* Paula Howell, Education Assistant, Anne of Cleaves House Museum,
Lewes, East Sussex, will be seconded to the Museum of Submarine Telegraphy,
Cornwall, to develop educational activities. Paula has been awarded £2,735.
* Nicola Moyle, Curator of Museums and Heritage, Plymouth City Museums
and Heritage Service, will be seconded to Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, to
develop the Heritage Lottery Fund bid for Bristol Museums to create a museum
of Bristol. Nicola has been awarded £2,956.
* Caroline Worthington, Curator Fine Art, Royal Albert Memorial Museum
& Art Gallery, Exeter, will be seconded to The National Gallery, London, to
work on planning education events for the exhibition 'Family Fortunes'.
Caroline has been awarded £3,425.
The next deadline for applications is 10 November 2000, followed by
quarterly deadlines until 31 March 2002. Grants awarded will normally be in
the region of £2,000-£6,000. They are available to cover travel and
subsistence costs, additional equipment or materials, and a contribution
towards the employment of temporary staff during the secondee's absence. A
partnership contribution of at least 20 per cent of the grant requested will
be required for each application. This will normally be in the form of
support-in-kind by the host museum.
