Prominent British authors reflect on their favourite German-speaking
writers and highlight the significance of their works and their artistic
and intellectual concerns. This series, organised in collaboration with
the Institute of Germanic Studies, starts with the following lecture:

Words without Frontiers
Collins European Conference
This conference looks at the cultural significance of literary
translations. International writers whose works have been translated
into other languages, critics, and translators will discuss a variety of
issues such as the universality of literature achieved through
translation, the notion of translation as a creative process of
interpretion and adaptation, and the importance of translations as a
means of discovering another culture from the inside.

Poetry International: Volker Braun
Born in 1939 in Dresden, Volker Braun has lived in Berlin for many
years. He has published plays, prose works, and poetry collections, most
recently Lustgarten, Preußen (1996) and Tumulus (1999). His numerous
awards include the prestigious Büchner Prize (2000): "The Academy has
never made a better decision in the past few years. ... Volker Braun is
one of the few authors from Socialist Germany who has not only been able
to cope with the political changes after 1989, but who has actually
grown with them." (Thomas Steinfeld, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung)
Volker Braun will read with John Ashbery and Jackie Kay. His poems will
be read both in English and German. The commissioned English versions by
David Constantine will be read by the poet Maura Dooley.
