SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS
Conference on Music and Literature in German Romanticism
University College Dublin, Friday 8 - Sunday 10 December 2000
The relationship between music and literature reached its zenith in
the German Romantic era. Music was for German Romantic writers
the highest art form, and it furnished a model of Romantic
aesthetics. These writers were among the first to be sceptical
about language as an adequate means of communication, and
Novalis pleaded for its musical rejuvenation: "Unsere Sprache [...]
muss wieder Gesang werden". E.T.A. Hoffmann famously saw non-
referential instrumental music as the most romantic of all the arts,
and various types of programme music and other ways of blending
literature and music also blossomed during German Romanticism.
This interdisciplinary conference aims to explore the mutually
beneficial relationship between music and literature during German
Romanticism. It appeals to musicologists, Germanists and
comparative scholars. The intent is to discuss the mutual
influences between both art forms.
Papers may be offered on any aspect and on any genre, but the
following topics are particularly welcome:
- Aesthetics of music
- Verbal music and verbalisation of music
- Compositions centred on German Romantic texts
- German Romantic Opera
- Lieder
- Music criticism and reviews
- Musical narrative structures and patterns in literary texts
- Musical settings of music-referential literary texts
The conference will run from mid-afternoon on Friday 8 December
until lunchtime on Sunday 10 December. The guest speakers are:
- Prof Dr Werner Keil (Detmold/Paderborn), who will be speaking on
E.T.A. Hoffmann and artifice,
- Prof Steven Scher (Dartmouth College, USA), who will speaking
on Goethe's "Faust" and the Composers
- Prof Susan Youens (Notre Dame, USA), topic t.b.a.
The conference organisers acknowledge with gratitude the financial
support of UCD and the Goethe-Institut Dublin.
Abstracts, ca. 200 words (in English), should be sent to the
conference organisers (listed below) to arrive at the latest by 18
September (by e-mail, fax, hard or soft copy). Please state your
preference for a 20 minute or a 45 minute slot.
The completed programme will be circulated in early October.
