You seem to be grappling here with a classification problem. You cannot put
viruses into a neat category so you suggest a notion of continuum

The "but somewhat different" is very revealing. Suppose the aliens really
did come to the planet several billion years ago.
What "phases" would they have found? And where do suggest we look for these
hypothetical "phases"?
In the future perhaps? Or are they already with us?
