The Sport Tourism Symposium program has been updated to include keynotes
and the first two days activities which also include some industry
presentations (TBA) and a panel discussion. For the program click here

Saturday are being grouped into themes and there are some spaces for
working paper presentations if anyone is interested on the Saturday.
Themes during Saturday will be most likely be 'motorsport and community
attitudes' 'sport tourists:profiling and loyalty' 'management of sports
tourism in mountain and natural areas', 'policy development and
implications of sport tourism.' These will be announced shortly.
For your information, the Federal Minister for Sport and Tourism (Hon.
Jackie Kelly) has been organised to open the symposium and launch the draft
Commonwealth National Sports Tourism Strategy while the Commonwealth
Division of Sport and Tourism will also present a paper on the development
of the national strategy. The symposium should attract about 50
delegates and is planned to be a gathering of people from the sport and
tourism fields including both academics and practioners. Several delegates
are coming from overseas including the UK, North America , France and Asia.

SPORT GENERATED TOURISM: EXPLORING THE NEXUS
5-7 October 2000, Canberra Australia
Hosted by the CRC for Sustainable Tourism and the Centre for Sports Studies,
University of Canberra
The symposium will examine linkages and interrelationships between sport
and tourism with papers and discussion helping to shape future research
agendas in the area of sport generated tourism. In the context of this
symposium the term 'Sport-Generated Tourism' or sport tourism is defined
broadly encompassing passive sport tourism such as sporting attractions and
events through to active sport tourism and adventure tourism such as
bicycle or golf tourism.
The symposium will therefore be of interest to sport and tourism academics
and practitioners world-wide, as well as people in the fields of
management, marketing, geography, sociology, and technology.
Preferred themes and sub themes for discussion at the symposium include:
-Sport and Tourism: The Link
-Sporting Mega-Events & their Impacts
-Sport and Tourism: Management & Marketing
-Ethical and Political Dimensions of Sport & Tourism
-Virtual Spectators: Sport, Tourism & the Media
-The Future of Sport & Tourism
A special session will be devoted to the Olympic Games and their tourism
related impacts.
KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Keynote speakers for the symposium include:
-Dr Joseph Kurtzman, Sports Tourism International Council and Editor of the
Journal of Sports Tourism.
-Linda Wayman, General Manager of Eventscorp Western Australia.
-Dr Lisa Delpy Neirotti, The George Washington University.
-The CRC Tourism Olympics Project Members including Bill Faulkner, Laurence
Chalip, Leo Jago, Graham Brown and Roger March.
-David Mazitelli, The Commonwealth Division of Sport and Tourism.
PRESENTATIONS AND DISCUSSIONS
Keynote presenters will outline the major themes of the symposium such as
the link between sport and tourism and issues surrounding the future
sustainable development of sport generated tourism.
Papers will also be presented by a number of international and Australian
speakers on a wide range of topics including sport tourism and pilgrimage,
tourism and the Olympics, the management of sport tourism and sport tourist
profiling.
Current expressions of interest have been received from practitioners and
academics from Australia, United States, Canada, Malaysia, United Kingdom,
South Africa, France, Portugal and Russia.
A number of panel discussions including experts from both the sport and
tourism field from both industry and academia are scheduled to assist in
the discussion of key issues surrounding the future development of sport
tourism.

The tentative program includes a variety of practitioners and academic
keynote speakers from both Australian and overseas.
The symposium also provides the opportunity to meet other delegates with an
interest in sport tourism in a relaxed social environment. Scheduled for
the symposium include a welcome reception, a field trip component and a
banquet dinner.

THE VENUE
Canberra, one of the world's best planned cities, is the national capital
of Australia and has an array of sporting, cultural, and natural heritage
attractions within a short distance from the city centre. Canberra is home
to the Australian Institute of Sport and boasts a variety of cultural
attractions such as Parliament House and the National War Memorial as well
as natural attractions such as Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve.
The venue for the symposium is Rydges Canberra which boasts a city centre
location on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin. Rydges Canberra is located
close to Civic, the commercial centre of Canberra as well as many of the
attractions that Canberra has to offer.
