How can we develop ways of improving and evaluating the way we deal with job creation issues? The First International Conference WORK 2001 to be held in Johannesburg during 4 days in April 2001 will focus on this important and emerging topic.

CALL FOR EXHIBITIONS
Organisations and companies are invited to host an exhibition desk at the conference, related to the main theme of employment creation. Please contact the conference convenors for more information about this opportunity.
ESSAY COMPETITION
The Organising Committee will reward up to 3 best papers with a prize comprising airfare or other transport, free attendance to the conference, and 3 nights accommodation in Johannesburg to a maximum total value of US$2000. All accepted and camera-ready papers will be entered in this competition, and the official prize-giving ceremony shall take place during the conference.
CONFERENCE VENUE & PROGRAMME
This prestigious gathering will be hosted on the campus of the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. The University offers a full spectrum of function rooms and facilities in a relaxed and safe environment. The conference will consist of presentations of academic papers for three days, and one day of site visits related to employment generation in the greater Johannesburg area. Details about the conference programme can be obtained from our internet site.
Besides the conference venue, South Africa boasts a wide variety of professional and touristic opportunities. The Organising Committee will offer various visits to construction sites and/or townships, game-viewing tours and other interesting venues.
CONFERENCE FEES
A special fee structure will be available for professional delegates, full-time students and one-day visitors. More information on fees will be available on our website and in later announcements.
PUBLICATIONS
Besides the official conference proceedings, the accredited academic journal Urban Forum has agreed to publish a special WORK 2001 conference issue. Urban Forum is an inter-disciplinary journal which encompasses a broad spectrum of interests, appealing to professionals in a number of related fields: academics, development agencies, governments, the NGO sector, community groups and the private sector. 6-10 papers will be selected for inclusion in this special issue. All papers submitted to the Convenors before the deadline will be considered for publication in Urban Forum.
