1. Wesleyan University announces its Andrew W. Mellon
Postdoctoral Fellowship 2001-2002. Scholars who have received
their Ph.D. degree within the last four years in any field of humanistic
inquiry are invited to apply for this fellowship. The purpose of the
fellowship is to provide younger scholars with free time to further their
own work in a cross-disciplinary setting and to associate them with
distinguished faculty. The fellow will teach a one-semester
undergraduate course; participate in the work of the Center for the
Humanities, which sponsors conferences, lectures, and colloquia on
various topics in the humanities, arts, and social sciences; and give
one public lecture. He or she will be provided with an office at the
Center for the Humanities, and will be expected, during the term of
the fellowship, to work there on weekdays while the University is in
session, and also to reside in Middletown. Themes for 2001-2002
will be "Defining Humanity: Unity and Difference" (fall) and "Politics,
Learning, Pedagogy" (spring). Please email Ms. J. Rich at

$31,000 (and a research grant of $500). Application deadline: Must
be received by November 15, 2000. Candidates should submit the
following documents (there is no official application form):
a) a statement of current research interests
b) a brief proposal for a one-semester undergraduate course related
to one of the two Center for the Humanities themes
c) a full curriculum vitae
d) at least three letters of recommendation
e) copies of published work, extracts from the dissertation, or drafts
of work in progress (not to exceed 30 pages)
