Andrew, others - I got to review a draft of ISO/TC211 metadata
earlier this year. Hundreds of pages. Mostly to do with the
GIS & remote sensing communities of course - dealing a lot
with data lineage, quality, etc. Lots of diagrams of the style
beloved by Relational Data Modellers.
A big and complex standard which goes way beyond what might be needed by
DC:Coverage - much of the information covers the same ground as DC and
all the other metadata standards so we'd be looking more at
comprehensive crosswalks than simply glomming the required bits into
DC:Coverage. And then it might take a bit of work to translate the
datamodel. Eric Miller will probably also have seen it and will
probably have opinions.
I made a few comments via our national representatives (this is the only
way to do it in ISO). These mainly covered two things:
1. It is currently a 2D standard with depth/elevation and time tacked
on very much as poor relations. I suggested how they could make it
properly 4D (x,y,z,t) where by judicious assignment of "optionality" it
need not look any different to mainstream 2D types, but would not
actually exclude 3D and 4D types (eg geology, atmospheric stuff,
mining). This required amendments to both the "bounding box" bits and
for 4D "rasters".
2. I proposed the addition of a "related" element like DC:Relation.
Dunno whether these made it through revisions. It is difficult to get
timely information out of my national contacts ...
