I was in Cardiff when this all happened and had to come back to Inverness.
To save fuel I drove at 50-60mph all the way on the (very quiet) motorways.
I reduced the cost of the journey by about 20% compared with the drive down
(at 70 mph).
If people are so concerned about fuel costs why do most of them burn past me
on the motorway and race (accelerate/brake) from one traffic light to the
next off the motorway? They could reduce their fuel costs by 20% if they
drove more sensibly.
Another unforeseen side effect of the more gentle drive (similar to driving
in the US with it's generally lower speed limits) was we arrived more
relaxed than usual, even though it took us longer to get home. The quieter
roads with everyone else doing 55mph helped as well.
It will be hard to compare RTA rates because of the reduced traffic density,
but if someone can manage to sort the figures out I would be very interested
(adjusting for any pile ups at petrol station queues!).
