If anyone's interested, I read the rules and regulations in my Gym
today (David Lloyd in Brighton) regarding this issue. They only allow
children over the age of 12 to use any of the sauna, steam room and
spa (jacuzzi), the first two for the seemingly sensible reason that
young childrens thrmoregulatory mechanisms aren't mature enough to
cope with the rapid and relatively extreme temperature changes
(presumably putting them at risk of potentially life threatening heat
illness), by this reasoning, other at risk groups would include the
elderly and infirm, and those taking various drugs.
The parts of their guidelines I wasn't so sure about was use in
pregnancy (also reduced thermoregulatory capacity??) And the
suggestion that children shouldn't use the Spa, as they "may be more
susceptible to it's relaxing effects"!!
Thanks for making this an interesting and amusing alternative
educational resource.
However, the whole c-spine debate is not doing much for my confidence
in clearing potential c-spine injuries in the late evenings on my
own!! I guess experience counts for alot in this.
