I thoroughly enjoyed the BASICS conference, and fell into discussion about this list. One member who admitted to being a lurker did so because of concern
that they would somehow infect the list, and concern that they would be shouted at if they used html (which they freely admitted they had no idea about) or if
they infected the list.
It is possible to turn fancy text off in Outlook, but it frankly is not a terribly good program. My main beef with it is that it stacks all your incoming mail in one
pile and all your outgoing in another, and so it is easy to lose the thread of a conversation. Couple that with it defaulting to sending the message you received
back to everyone on the list fancy effects and moans that my reader doesn't understand Mime (perfectly well, thank you), and you simply overload the email
system completely. Jel (Coward) and I are probably two of the more experienced users here, and we would like to recommend two other readers that we like. Jel
uses Turnpike (which he will post a URL for) and I use Ameol, available at http://www1.cix.co.uk/. The great thing about Ameol is that it allows threading of
comments. They are automatically attached to other postings and so you have an automatic archive with each thread individually preserved. It also (as you
can see ) posts in good old-fashioned plain text. You can't infect my computer and I can't infect yours with plain, unparsed text. Even better, it can be set to
dial in automatically (you didn't really think I got up at 6:11 every morning, did you?!) and assembles all the threads neatly for me to read when I am ready. It is
different from Outlook and therefore will have a learning curve, but you won't go back.
Best wishes,
Rowley Cottingham
