Cliff
this is a really interesting issue.
Thought I'd enquire as to what the situation is in our hospital, senior MLSO
in the Labs nearly had a stroke at the suggestion of using I/O aspirate.
Said categorically no but would chase it up with the medics. I phoned my
counterpart in Yorkhills Sick Kids hospital Glasgow. After consulting their
lab staff the word was they could do type specific but not full cross match
but would'nt be happy doing it and wouldn't entertain U&Es. We teach
everyone to send the aspirate when we're covering fluid resuscitation and
drug therapy in kids. It's mentioned on PALS and APLS and John Eaton's 2nd
Ed Essentials in Immediate Medical mentions sending the aspirate
specifically for S&G.
So - turns out we've all been talkign mince all these years.
Well done for raising my attention to it.
Cheers
