I am looking for information on gait reeducation for a 6 year old girl
who has just had a L hip fusion. I am not clear whether they have
fused it in neutral, or in slight flexion (she is not my patient, but I
am being asked for advice). What kind of gait can one expect to
achieve, and what future problems would one expect ( I would think
back problems and R hip and knee problems).
She has had TB in her R femur, which has left her with a very
unstable R knee, to the point that pre-operatively she was
weightbearing only minimally on the R. The L hip problem started
after she was pushed off a 10' cliff, and then kept in a cow shed for
several weeks or months before being brought to the hospital.
This fusion is her third surgery on the L hip. The head of her L
femur has "died" (I presume avascular necosis), and the hip has
been dislocated, with only a very poor acetabular cup remaining.
Are there knee braces which will give good stability to the R
knee, so that she can walk? Has anyone got information on them?
Do they "grow " with the child? This child has been taken in by a
Canadian family, and so could conceivably get access to a brace
from the "developed world" if it would help.
Thanks for any information you can give.
Mary
