Dear Pilas members,
I believe it is the tradition to introduce oneself upon joining the list, so
here goes:

I did a BA in Modern Languages (mainly Spanish) at Clare College, Cambridge,
graduating in 1999. I spent an amazing third year in Arequipa, Peru,
teaching English at the university there (also visited Bolivia, Ecuador and
a lot of Peru). Upon my return I wrote a dissertation entitled something
like "Lima, la horrible: contemporary urban identity and reality in the
novels of Alfredo Bryce Echenique and Jaime Bayly" - great fun. In the year
after graduating I did a lot of temping and a lot of internships, notably at
the Inter-American Development Bank, the Foreign Policy Centre and the
United Nations High Commissioner on Human Rights (the Indigenous Project
Team). I'm about to start the MA in Latin American Studies at ILAS in London
and will take courses in Nationalism & National Identity, the Politics of
Human Rights and Society and Development. I hope to do something on the
internet, civil society and in particular indigenous peoples for my
dissertation next summer but this is only a starting point. Anyone into
anything similar is welcome to get in touch.
