The Open Society Institute is a private operating and
grantmaking foundation that promotes the development
of open societies around the world. OSI is part of an
informal network of more than 30 autonomous nonprofit
foundations and other organizations created and funded
by philanthropist George Soros in Central and Eastern
Europe, the former Soviet Union, Guatemala, Haiti, and
South Africa, as well as in the United States. In the
United States, programs have been developed in the
areas of criminal justice, drug policy, immigration,
death and dying, education and youth development,
reproductive health and rights, media and journalism
and professional ethics in law and medicine.
The Communications Department supports these US
Programs and also assists/advises grantees with
communications. The Media Officer will report to the
Communications Director in a newly reorganized
department. This is an exciting opportunity for
someone with excellent press relations skills and an
enthusiasm for promoting the Foundation's mission.
This job entails the following:
Responsibilities
Respond to press inquiries that come in to the
department, regarding the various programs or grants;
Conduct aggressive media outreach regarding the OSI
programs and issues. This outreach will include
building on a contact base of reporters and producers,
searching out new contacts and press opportunities,
working with the director of communications to assist
the programs by building on a media outreach strategy
that adds to their overall aims;
Develop and update press lists;
Work with the director and others in the department to
create a standard press packet for the overall OSI-US
Programs keep it up to date and develop other press
outreach information as appropriate.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have had more than three
years of media outreach or press experience and have
some familiarity with the issues which concern OSI-US
Programs. Candidate should have an ability to frame
stories and issues for the media, an enthusiastic
nature in dealing with the press, an interest in
promoting the OSI-US Programs agenda, good writing and
speaking skills. Instead of on-the-job media outreach
experience, a candidate could have a journalism
background.
The ideal candidate will also be highly organized and
self-motivated, able to work under deadline pressure,
to juggle several priorities and projects at once, and
be able to work effectively in a multicultural
environment.
Salary: Commensurate with experience. Excellent
