I think in some ways this buys into dominant constructions of
gender/sexuality as well as 'Disabled/NonDisabled. As Mairian
points out for many of the Big-Deaf community who choose to get
cochlear implants, it is about accessing other languages rather
than about 'hearing'. when looked at this way you can find many
members of the 'Hearing' community who have learned their own
countries sign language, not to mention the languages of other
marginalised minority groups.
