Subject: Holy Well at King's Newton

With your Holy Wells hat on, I wonder if you can tell me anything about a
well at King's Newton, near Melbourne in Derbyshire?
Sorry I forgot to note the map reference before I came out. It appears it
was located on a lane that leads north from the Pack Horse pub (genuine old
pub on known packhorse route). The lane curves west to rejoin the present
road over Swarkestone Causeway at the bottom of the hill down from
Stanton-by-Bridge, although at one time (pre C15?) it probably continued
directly north towards Chellaston and Derby via a ford or ferry that
Swarkestone Bridge/Causeway replaced. I say the well "was located", because
although it is marked as "Holy Well" (in the character face used for
antiquities) on several old OS maps (pre about 1910), it does not appear on
current ones. I do not have ready access to maps from the middle part of the
20th Century that might indicate when it actually disappeared (or became
unholy!).
Any ideas? If you haven't anything yourself, perhaps you could ask for me on
the wells and spas list, please.
Thanks
Glyn
