Who should attend: Academic and support staff who have little or no
experience in teaching and supporting students on-line using a
Virtual Learning Environment.
Overview of workshop: It is an introductory session to Virtual
Learning Environments (VLEs) and Computer Mediated Communication
(CMC) but also provides the opportunity for those already using this
type of technology to view it from a completely different angle.

Abstract:
This experience is for those who wish to explore virtual reality and
map the issues surrounding the use of electronic learning
environments and electronic conferencing. No previous experience of
IT, electronic tuition or programming is required. Only pencils,
paper and artefacts provided by your guides will be used - no
electronic wizardry or magic needs to be included in your luggage.
Your guides on the voyage will be:
Michelle Haynes - Open and Distance Learning Adviser and
Kyriaki Anagnostopoulou - Learning Technologies Adviser both from the
Centre for Learning Development, Middlesex University

*understand the concept of virtual learning environments
*feel inspired to use electronic conferencing in teaching and
learning situations
*want to explore further the use of virtual environments in your own

Mode of Travel:
We will commence the voyage in a large group and you will be dynamically
allocated to small groups as required for the purposes of the learning journey.
This information will be on your boarding card which will be issued
before departure.
Mapping the Terrain:
After a brief introduction the whole group will consider the requirements of
students in any learning environment and will participate in
establishing the possible content of a virtual environment. The
journey will continue in small groups which will provide the
opportunity to participate in virtual electronic conferencing . The
voyage ends with a group reflection on the issues raised by this
concerning the electronic support of teaching and learning .
The quotation is taken from a twentieth century novel set in the next
millennium with a character from ancient times. Complementary gifts
will be available for those who can identify the book and its author.
