Dear Stewart,
I hope your melodramatic email was a joke, for your
sake. Many things that physios do have no solid
evidence behind them but this doesnt mean that they
don't work. Patients who are given sound advice
following an injury will obviously progress better
than those who do nothing. In addition, people are
more likely to come to a physio who gives them a good
sales pitch and a variety of treatments than one who
tells them that there is no evidence for what he is
doing. This is true of all aspects of life, whether it
be people selling cars, houses or food. Don't feel
guilty about making money whilst treating people who
feel that they have benefitted from your help. The
time to feel guilty is when you don't get people
better through lack of effort on your part. I'm afraid
that there aren't many truly altruistic professions
out there. You could go and save the rainforests or
work in a homeless shelter, which I am sure are far
more spiritually rewarding than physiotherapy, but who
will pay your bills? At least being a physiotherapist
gives you the chance to help people, many of whom are
very grateful and will feel that you have made a large
and positive impact on their lives.
Now are you sure you don't just feel like this cos you
haven't had any lately?
Nick
