There is quite a lot of work on this in the social
psychology and communication literature related to
'self-disclosure' and there is a fine line between helping
and hindering a therapeutic relationship.
It is often a skill that is developed with experience and
can be eroded under stress so the other area to look at
might be 'professional burnout'
