There are many courses in Australia for Masters Qualification in
Physiotherapy. Invariably, the people who respond either work at the
University or have graduated from the university.
I graduated from Curtin and worked there for 7 or so years - I recently
left with other staff members and students to create a new Centre at the
University of Western Australia. Our web page is in my address. - so that
you know where I'm coming from.
I can say confidently that the graduate education system in Australia (PT
schools) is changing dramatically. But the standards are good - personal
opinion.
There are three avenues for Masters Qualifications from PT schools - there
maybe combinations of each available at different universities:
1. Masters by research - this is a thesis study. In my experience of
supervising and examining research theses by candidates in this type of
masters. Most of these thesis are attempting to contribute to the science
of the profession and actually bridge the clinical academic divide. These
are generally fulltime study regimens (for international students) but part
time are sometimes available.
2. Masters by course work - these are also clinical masters degrees and are
'upgrades' of the graduate Diploma courses that were associated with Manips
and Sports from the mid 1990's - You can specialise in specific areas:
Manipulative thereapy is popular as is Sports Physiotherapy. (We also teach
a Sports Manual Therapy course which is a Graduate Diploma but mixes both
areas with shorter duration). Specialisation can also be done in
peadiatrics, ergonomics, womens health, neurology, cardiopulmonary,
orthopaedics.... These need to be negotiated with the University
specifically and really depends on the course work units available and the
availability of a mentor / expert / supervisor. You don't want to enrol
and find out the only person specialising in x is on 6 months leave etc etc
.. This type of qualification could also include a 'minor' thesis.
For International Students it is conmmon to enrol fulltime. Although some
universities allow part time enrolments.
3. Masters entry course. some Universities are openly advertising Masters
Entry PT courses. These represent an entry level into the profession by
individuals with a prior qualification. These will be fulltime (including
summer semesters generally) and full fees. Our University / Centre only
teaches post-graduates at the moment so masters entry interest should go to
the major undergraduate teaching Universities.
The universities can be contacted on the web.
These include:

Queensland

Queensland University, QLD http://www.uq.edu.au/physio/
There are Universities considering Masters entry - but I'd hate to miss out
some and I am not sure of the stage of progress in the paper work.
There are also non-university aligned group specialising in skills training.
In the end I would like you to consider what we offer for flexible learning
...but you are likely to get 'good' service from *most* educational
institutes in Australia. There are pre-requitistes eg experience,
basegrade qualification and English requirements for each course.
Like anything make sure you shop around and get what you really want.
Good luck.
Garry.
