I recently visited the country's only remaining 8-sail windmill, at
Heckington (Lincs), but my curiosity was aroused by the fact that
the mill had originally had only 5 sails.
So I have two questions for the list's collective wisdom:
(1) Was it usual for a windmill to have as many sails as this?
(2) What advantage is there in increasing the number of sails?
