Just a quick response to Gerry's posting, from a user's point of view.
I've just finished editing a very large, multi-contributor book for an
academic publisher. Checking, editing and developing the bibliographies
for this was a major task. Somewhat to my own surprise I found that I'd
fallen into the working practice of running a window to our OPAC and one
to Amazon.com side by side on my screen while doing this work. Flipping
my attention from one to the other as required worked quite nicely but
Gerry's posting suddenly made me realise what I need in future - precisely
some form of inter-linking, with Amazon providing the qualitative 'depth'
and associative links that an OPAC lacks.
I can see the difficulties from a provider's perspective, but from a user's
perspective my recent experience suggests huge unrealized potential there.
