Miranda,
Ciaran O'Neill, Jim Jamison, Dave Smith, and I have just sent off a
review of the (non-existent) literature on the cost of Age-Related
Macular Degeneration of the eye to Drugs and Ageing. The most you
will find relates to the effects of Diabetes.
I am also working with Dave on a project at Queens Belfast,
assessing laser therapy for ARMD, and I know that Dave has been
involved in the CEA of a Novartis drug to treat ARMD. In the
elderly, the key issue for governments is the social services
interventions resulting from blindness, when a person is unable to
cope, either for her/himself, or on behalf of several others whom
she/he has been supporting.
Is there a need for a variable "strength of local network", measuring
the extent to which people help each other informally? It's hard to see
how to get a handle on this - the actual physical layout of dwellings
(high flats versus terraced houses), and transport links, would also
play a part.
I'd be grateful if you could pass on the other responses.
Regards,
Douglas.

This is a simple minded question, and I realise there are complicated
issues, but does anyone know of estimates, preferably UK based, of health
care, personal and social costs associated with blindness, and associated
with major burns - any references or websites gratefully welcomed.
With thanks in advance, will return collated info to senders if wished or
post on Mailbase web site if permitted.
