This session will explore various issues (such as health, illness,
well-being, etc.) of enAblement and empowerment for women who are disabled
from "hidden" disabilities or chronic illness. We hope to unsettle the
notions of disabled women's lives and examine the possibilities of
empowerment through place. The themes involved in this session include the
following:
-How chronically ill women are challenging disabled spaces of everyday life
-Political identity of "disabled" by chronically ill women
-Geographies of health and healing
-Geographies of women's health and experiences
-Women's experiences of medical and holistic health care practices
-Cultural representation of geographies of women's health and ill health
-Embodying disabled and enabled identities
-Soci-spatial processes of exclusion/inclusion of women with impaired bodies
-Struggles to assert chronic illness/disabled women's rights in the legal
system
-Living disablement in the global economic periphery
-"Classing" the bodies of disabled women
-Feminist geography approaches to illness and well-being
-Strategies for enabling women in urban/rural settings
-Sexual identity and places of disablement/enablement in women's health
-Socio-spatial productions of disabling/enabling environments
-Socio-spatial use of world-wide-web technologies by disabled women for
health and well-being
