In the expectation that this information may be useful to other
list members:
1. The web site at

contains an extensive tutorial on chemical reaction stoichioimetry
("balancing chemical equations" is a simple version of this), as well
as a Java Applet that can balance anything you give it :-)
2. I just returned from giving an invited paper at the 16th
Bicentennial Conference on Chemical Education at Ann Arbor, MI.
I spoke about the use of reaction equilibrium software in the
undergraduate curriculum (intro and advanced level). This includes
ionic equilibrium (which I assume you'd cover), as well as many
