HCI SEMINAR AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE
SPEAKER: Cecília Kremer Vieira da Cunha (Pontifical Catholic University of
Rio de Janeiro)
TITLE: "Overview of Semiotic Engineering Research in HCI"
DATE: Thursday 31st August 2000

ABSTRACT:
This one-hour presentation is about the Semiotic Engineering Research
Group (SERG) and how it has been approaching Human-Computer Interaction
(HCI) issues. Some basic concepts of Semiotics are described and
afterwards we explain how SERG has been applying these concepts to HCI,
mainly by working with the idea of interaction as a communication process
between software designer and software users.
THE SPEAKER:
Cecilia is a doctorate student at the Computer Science Department of
PUC-Rio (Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro) and currently
also a Visiting Graduate Student at the Technical Communication Department
of the University of Washington. Her research involves mainly End-User
Programming and Collaborative Work. During her Master she developed a Text
Planner for an Explanation System based on Rhetorical Structure Theory.
