In the U.S. "Stage III archaeological mitigation"
usually means an intensive excavation (sometimes
called "data recovery" as opposed to survey or
testing) in preparation for total or partial site
destruction. The term is often used by archaeologists
doing Cultural Resource Management (CRM) under federal
and sometimes state cultural heritage laws.
