On the subject of A&E telemedicine, list members may already be aware that I
am currently engaged in a formal evaluation of telemedicine to support minor
injuries units and remote A&E departments.
This work forms the basis of an MD thesis, and is funded by the Department
of Health under the Information and Communications Technology Initiative
(ICT/312).
Results from stage one (a technical evaluation) have just been sent to the
DoH and will be disseminated shortly. Results from stages two and three (a
randomised clinical trial and economic evaluation) will be available early
next year.
For interested persons we have a project web site at:

Jonathan Benger.
SpR, Bristol (Currently research fellow in A&E telemedicine)
PS: The Cornwall set-up described by Margaret Hocking is an excellent
example of successful A&E telemedicine, as is Sapal Tachakra's work at the
Central Middlesex, and the service based in Aberdeen.
PPS: I am particularly interested in contacting those units which have found
telemedicine to be less of a success than they had hoped. I am aware that
successes get published, but departments where uptake is poor are unlikely
to be noticed. Please contact me directly if you have any experiences!
