CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of the Journal Critical Public Health titled 'Genetic
Governance & Public Health' edited by Robin Bunton and Alan
Petersen
Developments in genetic research and practice are rapidly finding
application in the theory and practice of public health and are
appearing in screening, testing, and counselling. Genetics promises to
revolutionise the treatment and prevention of disease through the
development of new therapies and interventions. Such developments
are currently re-shaping the way we conceive of our bodies, our
selves, and our environments,
They are questioning current understanding of the private and public,
and the relationship between 'nature' and 'culture,' as well as the
relationship between citizens and the state. As such, the 'new genetics'
has far reaching implications for the social and political understanding
of public health.
A special issue of Critical Public Health aims to bring together a range
of current international work addressing issues of social and political
regulation, 'genetic-' or 'bio-governance' arising from the new genetic
technologies. It will address the consequent emerging moral and
political agendas. We are particularly interested in contributions that
would explore and offer critical perspectives on issues of
governmentality relating to emerging forms of knowledge and practice.
Contributions might address for example: genetic epidemiology, bio-
informatics, genetic counselling, clinical surveillance, the representation
of genetic science, reproductive technologies and global policy and
regulation and other topics that have implications for public health.
If you are interested in making a contribution please contact either
Robin Bunton ([log in to unmask] tel 01642 342356) or Alan
