With apologies for cross-posting, I'd appreciate it if 
colleagues could draw the following to the attention of 
potential candidates, including recent finalists and 
others (e.g. unsuccessful ESRC competition award 
applicants). 

Applications are invited for an  ESRC CASE studentship 
in the Geography Department, University of Portsmouth, on a project 
linked to the interests of the Hampshire Ambulance Trust. The 
studentship will be supervised by John Mohan and Graham Moon 
(University of Portsmouth) and staff of the ambulance trust. This is 
a readvertisement; previous applicants will be reconsidered. 

The project will investigate,
through a mix of extensive and intensive techniques, variations in the
reasons for and rationale underpinning variations in training policies
across ambulance authorities in the South East Regional Office of the
NHS with a view to understanding of the extent to which common
approaches to training needs can be devised given local variations in
the workload and organisation environment of ambulance trusts. 

We would welcome applications from well-qualified graduates in the
social sciences. Candidates should have or expect to gain at least a
2.1 in a relevant discipline (Geography, sociology, social policy,
maths / statistics) preferably with a strong element of health-related
work, and possibly a Master's qualification in a relevant area. As
well as recent graduates applications are also welcome from staff
educated to degree level working in the health sector and seeking to
move in a research direction. The work will be largely qualitative in
character involving documentary analyses, questionnaires and
interviews. Although located in a geography department we have a
strong commitment to interdisciplinary work and staff and students
have backgrounds in maths, history and social policy as well as in

The studentship attracts the standard ESRC allowance (currently £6620
p.a.) and an additional £1375p.a. from the collaborating
organisations. In addition a supplement of £1510 is payable for
students aged 26 or over.  It is for 2 years in the first instance
with renewal for a thrd year being subject to satisfactory progress.
