HARVARD UNIVERSITY LIBRARY
COORDINATOR OF DIGITAL ARCHIVING AND PRESERVATION
The Harvard University Library is one of the world's premier libraries, with
a long history of building and maintaining enormously deep research
collections in all traditional formats. The Library is now in the midst of a
significant 5-year project to develop the capacity to support digital
collections of equal strength. Harvard has a well-established and
distinguished program for the preservation of materials in analog media. As
it moves into the digital arena, maintaining the viability of electronic
collections will be of equal concern. Towards that end, the Library has
already secured an initial endowment for preserving digital resources.
Recognizing that the field of digital preservation is new and that there are
few individuals as yet with experience in the area, we are conducting a
world-wide search for this position. Queries or applications are welcomed
from any interested parties, regardless of nationality.
The field of digital preservation is new and poorly defined, and there are
few models on which to base a large-scale program. We are seeking a
knowledgeable and energetic person to join our digital library team to:
-- propose, plan, and help implement an array programs for the long-term
protection and migration of digital collections of all types, including
e-journals and e-books, other textual materials, images, databases, and GIS
resources;
-- provide advice and consulting to Harvard staff on preservation issues
related to digital resources being acquired or created for Harvard's
collections;
The scope of responsibilities will include both activities that Harvard will
undertake and responsibilities Harvard will coordinate with vendors and other
institutions. We are looking for someone with the knowledge, vision, and
skill to represent Harvard in national and international forums related to
digital preservation, and to participate actively in relevant standards
processes.
The ideal candidate would have experience working in research collections
(libraries, archives, museums, data centers), with a minimum of 5 years of
progressive experience with digital resources. An understanding of issues
related to digital formats, media, and migration is required, along with an
aptitude for quickly mastering technical topics (programming experience is
not required). Excellent communications skills and the ability to work
collegially are essential. A graduate degree in computer science, information
science or equivalent experience is preferred.
This position is currently funded for 3 years.
