Netskills Workshop:
Images and Multimedia for the Web

Multimedia, involving the use of graphics, audio, video and animation,
is increasingly being delivered via World Wide Web. These technologies
can provide powerful tools for teaching and learning, marketing and
general provision of information via the Internet.
This practical workshop is aimed at users of the World
Wide Web who have had some experience of creating
basic Web pages. The workshop focuses on the issues
and practical aspects of designing and creating
multimedia Web pages. The morning session primarily
deals with the use of images including formats,
animation and thumbnails while the afternoon concentrates
upon audio, video and design issues.
Workshop Content:
The workshop will comprise presentations, demonstrations and
hands-on sessions with opportunities for questions and discussion.
Participants will each receive a workbook which contains workshop
exercises, presentation slides and other relevant materials.
Topics covered will include:
* scene-setting overview of the use of multimedia including images,
audio, video and animation
* the use of different image formats, including JPEGs, animated and
transparent GIFs, thumbnails, colour-depth, palette compatibility
and file size/download implications
* creating straightforward image maps in standard HTML
* investigation of audio and video formats including, real-time
streaming technologies
* use of plugins and helper applications including Quicktime and Real
player formats
* Virtual Reality Modelling Language (VRML)
* web-page design issues relating to the use of images and multimedia
By the end of the workshop participants will have:
* created web pages using image formats such as JPEG, GIF - including
animated GIFs
* optimised images for web use, including manipulation of
colour-depth, image file size and the use of thumbnails to reduce
download time
* converted an image into an image map using standard HTML
* investigated a variety of multimedia formats and delivery methods in
the context of the Web
* included audio and video elements in Web pages
* created a simple VRML file for inclusion in a web page
* explored the key design issues associated with writing multimedia
Web pages
Workshop Requirements:
Participants should have previously used the World Wide
Web through a browser such as Netscape or Internet
Explorer and have authored simple Web pages using
HTML. Experience in using Microsoft Windows for
opening and saving files and opening and closing
applications such as a Web browser would be helpful.
The cost of the workshop is £ 110 for participants from higher and
further education. Other participants should contact Netskills for the
relevant fees.
