Appointment of new Director of UKOLN
Dr Elizabeth Lyon has been appointed as the new Director of the UK Office
for Library and Information Networking (UKOLN) at the University of Bath.
Dr. Lyon is currently Head of Research and Learning Support Systems at the
University of Surrey, and succeeds Lorcan Dempsey who moved to the UK Higher
Education Funding Councils Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC)
earlier this year to direct the Distributed National Electronic Resource.
UKOLN is a national centre of expertise in networked information management.
It provides technical and policy leadership to the library, information, and
cultural heritage communities as they advance into networked environments.
Jointly funded by Resource: the Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries,
and by the JISC, it also receives project funding from the European
Community and the British Library. UKOLN pursues research and development,
provides advice and consultancy, and promotes community-building and
consensus-making through awareness and events services.
Dr. Lyon has directed several major projects related to multimedia and
digital libraries, including the development of PATRON, an innovative online
support system for teaching in the performing arts as part of the eLib
programme. She has also directed a number of specialised Units promoting new
learning technologies and has served on several JISC-related committees.
