One Day Seminar, 24 July 2000
School of Oriental and African Studies, London
Web Databases - Stage Two:
Options and Responsibilities
for Content Publishers
In an ideal world, a web site would be developed carefully
over a long period of time, with all aspects of technology,
rights, customer analysis and privacy considered carefully
in advance. The reality is invariably a sprint to site
launch, followed by a subsequent period of consolidation.
This day is intended for those who have built a database-
backed web site or will shortly be launching one. It aims to
provide a varied analysis of important issues for you to
consider.
The day divides into two parts: options such as technologies
to power the back-end of your site, customer analysis, and
how people retrieve information; and responsibilities such
as privacy, data protection, and the rights of customers
over material submitted wittingly or unwittingly by them.
A typical site provider should come away from the meeting
with an insight into a number of areas they should be
thinking about; a typical user should come away thinking
about what they can easily concede when visiting web
presences.
The two strands will be divided into a morning and afternoon
session.
Options strand areas:
* technical aspects of collecting details of users;
* attempts to control privacy for site visitors;
* technologies which will make it easier to build 'smart'
sites.
Responsibilities strand areas:
* identifiable users and relationship to data protection;
* territorial issues;
* intellectual property rights for site users;
* republishing materials collected from users and other
sites.
