Department of Sociology
Lancaster University
Further Particulars:
Part-time Temporary Lecturer or Teaching Fellow
Salary (full-time equivalent) = ?16, 775 - ?18,731
The Department has been ranked in the highest possible category in all four
Research Assessment Exercises, gaining 5* in 1996. It was awarded 21 points
for teaching in the Teaching Quality Assessment Exercise.
The Sociology Department offers the major degree; BA Sociology; combined BA
degrees with Criminology, Economics, Educational Studies, Organisation Studies,
Politics, Religious Studies, Women's Studies and History; and a minor degree in
Social Anthropology. The Department convenes MA degrees in Sociology, Science
Studies and Tourism and Leisure, and contributes to others in Women's Studies
and Health Research. It also offers M.Phil and PhD research degrees.
Undergraduate students at Lancaster take courses in three different departments
in their first year and then, in their second and third years, complete the
equivalent of eight full unit courses, typically 20 weeks in length and
comprising a lecture and seminar each week.
The Department is looking for a temporary part-time (0.5) lecturer A for 12
months OR a temporary part-time (0.67) teaching fellow for 9 months. Which of
these is offered will depend on the experience, publication record and other
qualifications of the applicants. A teaching fellow would be employed on an
'other related' teaching-only contract and be expected just to teach. A
lecturer would have a lighter teaching load but be expected both to teach and
to conduct research contributing to the department's research profile. The
Department's existing areas of research strength are in Social Theory, Gender,
Identity and Race, Culture and Identity, Political Economy, Science Studies,
and Technology and Work.
The appointee will be expected to teach a second year course on Women in
Society and contribute to other courses on gender, either at third year level
or MA level. Interest in and ability to teach research methods to
undergraduates would be a welcome addition.
The Department has a strong tradition of inter-disciplinary research. Current
members have intellectual backgrounds in several disciplines besides sociology,
especially cultural studies and social anthropology, and most have strong
interdisciplinary links across the University. The Department cooperates
extensively with a number of Institutes and Centres in the Faculty of Social
Sciences, particularly with the Institute for Women's Studies and the Institute
of Cultural Research. It also now provides the home for the Centre for Science
Studies. The research activities of the Department and other institutes and
centres are described in the University's web pages and potential candidates
are strongly recommended to consult these.
Essential experiences, skills and attributes of the postholders.
The person appointed should have experience of teaching in the area of gender
in sociology, and should either have or be close to completing a PhD.
Publications in refereed journals and an ability to contribute to existing
departmental research strengths would also be required for the post of
temporary lecturer. For either post, skills and enthusiasm in teaching at
undergraduate level are essential.
Closing Date: 22nd August 2000
Candidates should submit an application form, CV, short covering letter, and an
article, chapter, or short work that is representative of past or current
