Call for Papers

'Ethics, ICT and Social Exclusion'

8-9 February, 2001 The Egerton House Hotel - Bolton

Background to the Conference

Over the years, Bolton Business School has organised and run a significant number of
successful conferences. Our conferences attract delegates from a range of subject disciplines
- both from the UK and abroad. The theme of this conference has links with previous
conferences. We are pleased to announce that the School is organising this the 14th Bolton
Business School conference, to be held at the Egerton House Hotel on the 8-9 February 2001,
and invite you to attend, either as a presenter, or as a delegate.

Issues and Concerns

The rapidity with which businesses must adapt and change to remain competitive appears to
grow exponentially. But, with these massive changes - often technology enabled - are we
leaving some people behind? With the advent of E-business and the dramatic increase in the
use of the internet (both by businesses and home users) are we fuelling a two tier country of,
on the one hand technology enabled and on the other technology disabled? If so, is this an
ethical thing to do? This conference will explore the ethicality of 'social exclusion', the
ethical dilemmas that this creates, and the impact of ICT on the issue of social exclusion. It
will also examine the particular impact of technical developments and contemporary issues in
ICT.

Structure of the Event

There will be a keynote address to open each day of the conference, and a keynote speaker at
the conference dinner. Each presenter will have 30 minutes in which to give their paper, and
answer any questions from the audience. A plenary event will be held at the end of the
conference, where it is envisaged that participants will have the opportunity to explore, and
exchange views on, the issues raised during the conference. Bolton Business School holds
conferences with numbers strictly limited, to encourage a friendly, 'intimate' atmosphere. As
such, the conference is an ideal platform for inexperienced presenters who are perhaps at the
start of their research career, in addition to more experienced researchers. One stream of the
conference will be dedicated to first-time presenters. Please indicate on your manuscript if
you wish your paper to be considered for the 'first-time presenters' stream.

Keynote Speakers

Professor David Weir, Dean of Newcastle Business School, University of Northumbria at
Newcastle.

The other keynote speakers are yet to confirm their attendance, but we aim to have
acknowledged leaders in the field.

Paper Submission

Authors are invited to submit papers of approximately 4000-5000 words, pertaining to both
theoretical and practical research in any of the areas outlined below. Case studies are
welcome. We are particularly keen to receive papers from practitioners, as well as academics.
Abstract must be submitted for approval by 29 September 2000.

Areas of Interest

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
*	Ethics of E-business
*	Social exclusion from the production and consumption of technology
*	The role of the unskilled in a technology enabled world
*	Ethnicity & gender issues of exclusion
*	Social & ethical aspects of the impact of ICT on the workforce
*	Exclusion from lifelong learning & continuous professional development
*	Ethics of virtual universities
*	Social, political and cultural integration of technology and the excluded community
*	Exclusion & the 'grey' market

Preparation of the Manuscript

The abstract should be formatted for A4 size paper, using 12 point Times New Roman font.
Each submission must have:

*	An abstract
*	Name and addresses of all authors, their e-mail addresses, telephone number and fax
	number
Author biographical information is not required with the abstract, but may be supplied, if
desired, with accepted papers (this should not exceed 10 single spaced lines). Please ensure
that your abstract conforms to the above requirements, otherwise it will be returned to authors
who may subsequently miss the 29 September 2000 submission deadline. After notification
of acceptance, authors need to submit the camera-ready copy of their full paper by 8 January
2001.

Submission of the Manuscript

Abstracts should be submitted by e-mail, fax, or on disk by post, to arrive by 29 September
2000. Faxes must be typed and double spaced. Full papers should be submitted by 8 January 2001 both on disk (Microsoft Word) and as a camera-ready hard copy. This should contain the following, using Times New Roman font
throughout:

*	Keywords
*	Main body of paper
*	Bibliography (Harvard layout)
*	Biography (optional)
