Journal of Management Studies Special Issue on
Micro Strategy and Strategising
Guest Editors:

and
Richard Whittington ([log in to unmask]).
The title of this special issue signals two departures in the study of
strategic management. First, it shifts attention from strategies treated as
simple macro-level wholes towards the micro-level processes and practices
that actually constitute these strategies. Second, the title's use of the
verb-form problematises the thing-like status of 'strategy' to put the
focus
on the active and continuous engagement of strategy practitioners -
managers, planners, consultants - in the construction and enactment of
strategy. In short, this issue will be concerned with the close
understanding of the myriad, micro activities that make up strategy and
strategising in practice.
Over the last two decades, the strategic management discipline has made
good
progress in addressing such macro strategic issues as the sources of
economic rents, appropriate forms of diversification, the role of the
corporate centre and the fit of strategy and structure. In exploring these
issues, however, the level of analysis has typically been organizations as
wholes, treated rather abstractly. Relatively neglected have been the
actual
practices and practitioners involved in making and carrying through these
macro level strategies. The micro focus proposed here is concerned both
with
this lower level of activity in itself and with how this level connects to
the macro strategies of organizations as wholes. Central to this field are
the activities involved in strategising: the generating and shaping of
ideas, the interacting in routine and non-routine contexts, the using of
tools and language, and the creation of the various artefacts of strategy -
reports, presentations and symbols.
Papers are welcome on any topic or perspective falling within our scope,
but
possible themes might include:
- theoretical approaches to micro strategy and strategising, including the
potential of singular and plural theoretical lenses and the issue of the
micro-macro link
- novel methodological approaches to the study of micro strategy and
strategising, particularly in different contexts (e.g. national contrasts
or
e-commerce and entrepreneurial contexts)
- empirical studies of key strategic issues or concepts from a micro,
active
perspective (for instance, mergers and acquisitions, strategic change, core
competences or corporate culture)
- empirical studies of key strategy processes from a micro, active
perspective (for instance decision-making, agenda-forming, the shaping of
strategic innovation)
- empirical studies of key strategy actors and their work from a micro,
active perspective (for instance planning routines, consultancy tools and
heuristics, the shaping and bounding of cognition, the learning of
strategising skills, career tracks and human capital).
Four copies of all papers should be submitted to the Administrative Office
of the Journal of Management Studies at 11, Greenbanks Drive, Horsforth,
Leeds LS18 5BH, England. Papers should be marked for consideration for the
special issue and be received by 4 June, 2001. All submissions should
conform to the standard formatting guidelines of the journal.
